I,ve got seedling trays, 200 plants/ tray (10 rows x 20, polistyrene), what is the best way to sow tobacco seed in these trays, tried to sow as little as possible in each hole, but still some of them had about 5-6 seedlings in each, and then I must thin these out. Is there a method I can use to elleminate seed wastage? Is it best to sow in cups and replant the seedlings to the trays?

I find it easiest to sow in tray and just thin them out later.
You say you tried to sow as little as possible in each hole. Are you making little holes and putting seed into them? Tobacco seed normally just gets broadcast on top of the soil. The sunlight the seed receives aides in germination.

The easiest way is to use pelletized seed. Tobacco seed is microscopic small and hard to seperate. the next best way is start the seedlings in trays and transfer the seedlings when they are about an inch tall.

I do it the labor intensive way.

I dump a number of seeds on a piece of white paper.
Then I lick a pencil tip and apply it to pick up a single seed from the paper.
As I wipe the pencil tip on the moistened potting soil, it makes a small depression and the seed comes off into the soil.

I use recycled plastic egg cartons to germinate my seed in.

At the scale I am growing, it works well enough.

Best

I use a toothpick. Same way as rustycase except I can not see the dark seed against the dark pencil lead.

You can mix seeds with sand. 1 unit (by volume) seed to 30-40 unit sand. All of the tobacco farmers use this method.
