Hey guys,

To anyone in nz:

As of early next year the govt will be introducing stricter regs (read next to impossible) with regard bringing tomato seeds into New Zealand.

If you were intending to try any overseas varieties, now would be the time to get them into the country.

I've stockpiled about 117 different varieties - mostly heirloom and open pollinated

That's a lot of tomatoes! :)

What's the tighter regs for? PVY viruses? We have to get field inspections for PVY every year now and be certified virus free to ship our seed to the EU, even though PVY has never been observed in nicotianas. But they are closely related to tomatoes and potatoes, so the possibility of PVY being spread by tobacco seed is enough for it to make the list.

Something along those line I gather. My Da's a MAF inspector and gave me a heads up about it - if you didn't know to look for the info you would never know about it so i've been trying to get the word out!

Is this just for tomato? Or are they going to get even stricter on all seed imports

I did vaguely hear something about it on the news the other day. I can't remember if it was some new critter, or a type of virus that has begun affecting tomatoes here. They did mention that while it had not as yet spread there was the danger of it also affecting peppers and potatoes - so I guess tobacco is going to come in the firing line too.
