Hi from NZ...

So, i've planted some seedlings, and about half have taken hold.

These pics are from today:

Not too sure on seasons, when to harvest or what not, but, I have a question on size.

Just how large do these leaves get, because I have a lot of leaves that are already over a foot wide and two feet long...

Also, how tall are they likely to get before they mature?

According to the site I purchased the seeds from, it is 9th generation Virginia Gold Organic tobacco...

You'd think I'd have keep track of when I planted them etc...duh...

I grew seeds in an incubator, and planted them out approx 2-3 months ago.

It's been unseasonably warm, prior to xmas, and, I did plant them early so, I hope to get another crop out after harvest...

Not sure when I harvest them though...

Hello STIC,
for the time of harvest there are many opinions, the most widespread is to start after 21 days from flowering (or topping) and take a tour of harvest every week to harvest everything.
I usually start harvesting my Virginai Gold when the low leaves start to turn yellow, which happens around with the flowering of the plant. Then I look at the leaf is yellow or light green and it is falling with the petiole easy to detach, sometimes the leaf shows the signs of alligator ...
One thing I read and that convinces me is when the sucker is born in the lower part of the stem of the plant, near the root ... it would seem that the plant has made its cycle and is ready to give birth to a second plant (these my 2 cents).
Finally, I have an answer from Jitterbugdude among my appurtenances:
"Having said that, I usually pull all my leaves out at the same time! I've never noticed any diffference, I'm sure there might be, but I've never noticed it. Before I used the "correct" way, but I find this way much easier and faster to do ".

Did your plants bloom? (or topped?)

I expect the flowers will bloom above the top your fence.

No bloom yet...taken a few leaves off the bottom of a couple of plants and hung them in the garage to dry...

Stic, soon they will flourish and so you have to decide whether to keep the flowers (less nicotine, less weight of tobacco but more aromatic) or topping.
your plants are very beautiful and healthy!

So, the plants have doubled in size...approx 5 to 5.5 foot high now (tallest ones). No flowers yet and leaves still green, but I have harvested several leaves from the bottom of the plants:

I initially hung them up in the garage, but they dried too quick, so I sprayed them to get them moist again and have piled them up on a table with sheets over them to keep them from drying out and about half have 'cured' (gone dark brown).

I have used a coffee bean grinder to shred them, and have dried them out a bit in the airing cupboard; this produced an acceptable smoking tobacco, already smoked it, and have just taken the remaining 'brown' leaf and done the same...drying in cupboard now:

There's about 50-60 grams there, this is from approx 3 smaller leaves.

Stic, your coitivation is in the rapid growth phase, lasts about a month, and soon your plants will bloom ...
The low leaves are not very aromatic and have little nicotine, but they compensate for the higher leaves that give a lot of nicotine (and aroma).
you are almost close to the true harvest: always remember to have enough humidity (a lot of humidity) to take cure of the color and if there is heat the cure will be faster!
