In today's news, all the news media's are carry the article that heavy smoking (2 packs) increases your risk of getting Alzheimer's disease. It blows my mind that the article gives the actual numbers and then reports the opposite of what the results are:

Facts: Researchers followed 21,123 people. Of that group, 5,367 came down with Alzheimer's and of that group, 2,367 of them were smokers. So, if you run the numbers you get:

21,123 participants
5,367 get Alzheimer's
56% of the peole that got Alzheimr's were NON SMOKERS
44% were smokers

I do not know what the researchers were smoking, but my math says that smoking gives you a slight protective effect against alzheimer's!

Actually, the data is missing some serious input from the researchers. They never say what the percent of non smokers/smokers is in the original group of 21,123 people. So, even my numbers mean nothing!

I'd just about bet if you crunched the numbers of people in the united states over say a certain age you will get about the same % with Alzheimer's disease

What I mean is this

The study involved 21,123 people they followed . Of this number 5,367 came down with Alzheimer's disease . Or approx 25 % of the people followed later developed Alzheimer's disease .

I'd just about bet you could upscale this to following a million people to a certain age and that aprox 250.000 will develope the condition . Reguardless of them being smokers or non smokers I'd bet the numbers fall in a narrowv range very close to 25% . Unless of course they had sex 15 times a day for 5 years of the study time then all bets are off

Good catch, Randy, and The International Journal of Epidemiology says you're right.

Interesting since Philip Morris has a deal with a major pharmaceutical company researching compounds in tobacco for use in the treatment of alzheimer's and parkinson's and nicotine patches are also being used in studies for the treatment of these same diseases.

According to something I read one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life. If less than 20% of americans use tobacco, how can it be the primary cause of cancer?
