I ordered some seeds from http://home.att.net/~tobacco/. They have an excellent variety and they sent more different strains than I ordered.

The grow-out and preservation of retired tobacum cultivars
Trialing retired cultivars against current comercial cultivars
Selection and breeding of lines for Pennsylvania (USA) cultures

Sounds good to me! 8)

I just got done sewing some and will update when/if they germinate.

I just got an email back from that site. A pack of seeds is 2.00 US, if you only order 1 pack the shipping is 2.00 US, if you order several packs the shipping is 4.00 US. They did not mention international shipping.

Here is the email:

Packs of seed are $2.00(US) each and $4.00 for shipping/handling per order
within the US. Method of acceptable payment is personal check/money order
(not set up for credit card sales), payable upon receipt of order.

However, if you wish to get just one seed pack, the shipping/handling would
only be $2.00.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Quite an unusual web address for a commercial producer. It appears as if the information has been derived solely from the GRIN site...verbatim.

What was your germination ratio?

I guess it isn't a comercial site, but I didn't know where else to put it. The letter sent with the seeds says-

"This seed is a shared seed resource intended for tobacco culture hobbyists and researchers- not a seed source for comercial tobacco culture. The Nicotiana Project is not a retail or wholesale marketplace for seed."

I asked him for 3 kinds of burley and 1 kind of rustica and he sent 5 kinds of burley and 2 kinds of rustica. He sent the seeds without payment saying, "No need to pay in advance.".

I didn't bother to count seeds, so guessing at a ratio might be misleading. Every kind he sent me is now growing in my window except for the Maryland 609, but I think I killed that with water and too much soil mixed with the peat. He offererd to send some more and says he will test his M609 stock.

I actually searched HTGT for any reference to this site (Nicotiana Project), but the HTGT search engine can't recognize a web address as a distinct search term, and judges that the two words--either joined or separated--are too common to be worth a search. I just now discovered this thread. I wanted to see if there was any feedback. The URL has changed.

The current URL is http://www.nicotianaproject.net/

It appears to be a personal, ongoing project of Doug Moats, of Harrisburg, PA (touching right up against Lancaster County...good tobacco country). He promptly and fully answered my questions about his bagging material, techniques and results by email. Seems to be quite knowledgeable. The site has fairly extensive photos (apparently his own) of scores of tobacco varieties.

I didn't ask him, but perhaps his site is an attempt to display some of the results (albeit mostly photos) of his efforts, as requested pro forma by GRIN. At any rate, I get generally good vibes from his site.

If he offered a seed that I needed, I wouldn't hesitate to pay his quite modest price. You can be certain that he isn't getting rich off of it. (Heck! It costs me nearly two dollars just to drive to the post office.)
