hi,
im a newbie and have been avidly reading as many posts as i can, i have been wondering what is the best shred size for pipe smoking and the best machine / contraption to use to get it.

i am planning to press and block the leaf after curing/drying as i would like to make flake.

i have seen cross cut shredders that cut to 3mm and was wondering if this was ok or does it need to be smaller?

i am looking for the budget option until i work out or round the various ways of doing things

regards

dave

I just use a scissors for ciggie tobacco and somewhere around 2mm works well enough. It would probably work for a pipe, too, but I don't use my pipes very often.
Good luck

Dave -

The shredder I use has been modified to give me a .050 cut. The result is close to the Borkum Riff I used to smoke, and quite satisfactory for my pipes.

Pictures in the Picture gallery (top right), page 2 under my name.

I press my leaf into bricks after the kiln - shredding the bricked leaf gives me the chunky texture I like. The shredder will also chop rolled leaf, but that gives more of a light fluffy product.

I've used a paper trimmer too, but it's a lot slower.

thanks to all for the help

i think that i will probably go with the pasta cutter idea as they are reasonable and come in a variety of widths and easily adaptable
and probably for the amounts im planning to grow the best option

regards

Make sure your pasta maker has the angel hair attachment on it. That's the cut you want.
