I live in zone 5A (North-Central Illinois). I'm a Camel Menthol smoker, and would like to start growing my own and ditch the mentol.

Any recommendations on strains to grow? I'm an experienced gardener, but after looking through a seed catalog got a bit concerned by statements like "must be blended due to nicotine content."

What's a tried and true starting variety? It would be great if someone could let me know which strains will get close to (or better than) the flavor of Camels.

It would be very difficult to try and copy any of the commercial cigarettes because they use an entire laundry list of chemicals.
The list is posted around here in a couple places...

That, and kiln cured baccy as a major component.

In my case, burn rate was the biggest problem which I overcame with a certain amount of commercial tobacco in the blend.

It's fun to experiment when curing and processing.
