Ok, my first question to everyone:

Has anyone heard of this variety? I bought a pack of seed off eBay. It's a pack put together by a professional seed company, not something thrown together by some scammer.

I was curious as to what "makhorka" means (I understand "basma" and "prilep") so I searched for it here on this forum and found nothing. When I googled it, I was surprised to find it's what the Russians call N. rustica tobacco!

Is this possible? As far as I know, Prilep and Basma are N. tabaccum and can't really be makhorka.

Anyone possibly have any light they can shed on this confusion?

Thanks!

-Tom

Who did you get the seed from? I'm confused. Did you get 3 kinds of seed or just one?
Basma is an oriental Turkish strain. Prelip is an oriental from Macedonia. (I think) and is a very sweet delicious tobacco. Both are N. Tobacco strains. Makhorka is a N. Rustica strain from Russia. Tobaccums and Rusticas won't cross.

I bought the seeds from a vendor on eBay, selling retail seed packets.

This is what it is:

http://www.biotechnica.ru/Product_Detai ... 0%B5%D0%BF

I didn't look closely enough at the packet in the listing to realize who the seed company is, even though I could have. I audited a semester of a Russian class in college (I was trying to learn to speak it) and I can transliterate the letters. The top reads "Semena Makhorka" (Makhorka Seeds) bottom of the front of the packet would be transliterated, "V Biotechnika" - would translate as something like, "With Biotechnology". Had I looked closer, I probably wouldn't have gotten them.

On the page you see, "Махорка Басма Прилеп" which is Makhorka Basma Prilep. This is also on the back of the packet.

Maybe someone on the forum actually can read Russian and tell us more about it?

I got another one with Herzegovina on the front and Trabzon 182 on the back. Seems to be another contradiction?

Again, confused. Based on who produced these seeds and the contradictory info, I may not plant them.

I take it no one knows what this one is.

Oh well. I managed to find the company's email, so I sent an email asking about it. Since their entire website is in Russian, I'm not even sure I'll get a response.

If I do, I will surely post it here for everyone.
