New guy here,

I ordered some seed for the coming spring. Rapi Nui rustica and a Shirey tabacum. My question is this: How readily will rustica cross pollinate with tabacum, and what risks do the glauca tree tobaccos that run rampant in the neighborhood pose for unintended cross pollination, or do the separate species even cross readily? I also have some N. alatas in my garden....love the scent at night and the hummingbirds luv 'em too. Do I need to bag flower heads, or am I likely to be safe?

None of those can cross with each other, so you have no worries. Though they are all nicotianas and in the same family of plants, they all have different numbers of chromosomes.

Actually, it is possible to cross a tobaccum to a rustica, but it is difficult to do even when intentionally trying to cross them. However, it is not possible to cross a rustica to a tobaccum.

I love Alata's! We have Affinis and Jasmine growing again this year. They have beautiful flowers that last all summer long and they have to be some of the most fragrant flowers there is. Especially Jasmine. Their scent fills the whole yard in the evenings.
