Post subject:  Late germination... not going to mature in time?

Would really appreciate some advice!
This is my first time trying to grow tobacco, and I'm in the southern UK. I planted some Burley, Golden Virginia and Monte Calme Yellow back in March indoors in propagators (unheated). March was dreadful, freezing cold and no sun and our heating packed it in so nothing germinated and mould grew on the seeds and soil in the propagators. I assumed they had all died. However, we moved in May and in the warmer, sunnier house a lot germinated. Since then, they have been doing quite well but I am concerned that they are VERY small considering it is well into the season... will they finish growing in time? They are still on sunny windowsills at the moment but I intend to move them outside in a few weeks. But I'm not sure I should bother if there is no hope they will mature before summer is over.

This is one of the largest plants:

And there are some smaller than this:

Thanks :-D

I wish my plants were that big! You'll probably be fine. If anything your pants may be smaller than normal but I doubt it. From what everyone here says these plants really put on size late in the game.

How many days is your growing season there?

Your plants look good. Just right to plant out. You have plenty of time left for them to mature.

They look larger than my largest plants that I just transplanted, and still have more to transplant.

Go for it!

That's great news, I really thought they were small. Can you tell I've never grown tobacco before! I don't know how long our season is here really... we have milder, wetter summers than a lot of the rest of the UK, but last summer was good and long, hot and dry until into September so fingers crossed we get lucky again.

I think you'll be just fine.

One thing to remember is tobacco is in the same family as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants. So chances are if you can grow any of the others listed, you can grow baccy just fine. :)

Good luck!!
