Hi all! I’ve been lurking for a while but this is my first post. I feel like I have everything down except for a couple of questions regarding pot sizes and fertilizing.

First off, I’m in zone 9b.

I’ll be growing these somewhat smaller, heirloom tobaccos:

nicotiana quadrivalvis (Indian tobacco)
nicotiana langsdorffii (Huichol tobacco)
nicotiana tabaccum (Shirazi)

My questions are fairly straightforward:

I’ll be growing in pots on my apartment balcony. I won’t necessarily be growing to smoke so I don’t require a large leaf yield. Is it possible to grow the above species in smaller pots, say 3 gallons because they naturally won’t get as large as most species?

As far as fertilizer goes, is there something easy to use that is readily available at most home improvement stores or Amazon?

Those strains should all do ok in 3 gallon pots. For most strains you want at least 5 gallon pots. Be sure the pots have drain holes so the roots don't stand in water. Tobaccos hate having soggy feet.

Miracle Grow all purpose fertilizer works great on tobacco. Use one spoon per gallon of water every time you water them starting at about 6-7 week old. Stop fertilizing them 2-4 weeks before harvest so the nitrogen is nearly depleted at harvest, and the leaves will cure a lot out easier.

Thanks so much for the reply! I’m on a super tight budget and found some almost 3 gallon buckets at the dollar store so I’ll givevthem a run.

Thanks for info on the fertilizer as well!

Just got my seeds started and waiting for them to bust open.
