Years ago I grew a bunch of Black Mammoth here in Wi.and my first attempt at making dip using the un cured leaves was not terrible. After that every attempt failed. I think I've tried everything but I hope not.ive still got a barn full that I grew in 2011 and bags, and bundles galore. If this try at it fails I'm afraid I'm going to just have to toss it. Maybe it's the tobacco? I tried to cure some in a small freezer with a light bulb and moisture at 102 degrees for 30 days. It's really rank to smoke. The dip is INTENCELY bitter. The five year old hanging tobacco is bitter. What the heck can I do?

I took the stems from crushed leaves and boiled them. To the juice I added salt, soda, flavoring, molasses. I poured this in my ground tobacco until wet enough mixing throughly. I put it in a pan and kept it in the oven at about 175 degrees for various amounts of hours. The smell was pretty bad! After that I bagged it and kept it in the fridge for a long time. It really didn't change. Still very bitter and no good. What am I doing wrong?

I do not think Black Mammoth would be my choice of leaf for chew or dip.

and,

putting in the fridge would most likely not allow ammonia gasses to exit the shred... use a humidor or some setting where it may off-gas.

get a 2nd opinion ! :-)

The fridge may be a problem but keeping it in my junk freezer moist in hands at 102 F for 30 days should have done something to gas off right?

Thanks for the response too! It's driving me nuts. I bought the seed on line cause they claimed it was for chew/ cigar wrapper.

Smitty, sounds like a sure recipre for growing mold, to me...
Gotta have good ventilation.
Fridge is fine, if you got fans venting it with a cross-flow... like maybe some computer fans???
Good luck

Could be many months, in a decreasing amount. Most important to have free exchange and relief initially, rc
