I wanted to get a ball park of how many plants you guys think I would need for a years worth of chew or dip. I'm mainly a dipper but looking at making some chew as well. I go through a can in about 4 days. I'm hearing that Burley is best for chew/dip. So with the average yield of Burley, and a can of dip every 4 days, how many plants do you expect I should plant.

A can of dip is 1.2 ounces. Figure all the liquid they add to the tobacco the amount (by weight) of tobacco is no more than 1 ounce per can and probably less, but consider 1 oz/can. A good size plant will give you 4 ounces of tobacco

If my math is right, you go through 91 ounces/year. So you would need 23 plants. I'd suggest planting at least 30 to give yourself some hedge against mother nature.

You will need to experiment with what variety you like. Not all Burleys taste the same or soak up the same amount of liquid.

Yup.

...Wht JBD said...

4oz per plant is the rule of thumb we consider...
A Black Mammoth will get you more, but a Virginia, probably about that much...

....and I would try planting 50 or so.. and germinate many more than that...
Mother Nature, and all that...

Best

Thank you guys. Black Mammoth is on the list but looking at a Rustica, possibly Del Gold, to add to the starting batch.

Rusticas and Del Gold are high nicotine... just so you are aware. Rusticas yield lower amounts of tobacco compared to a Burley. Personally, I think Yellow Orinoco is the best tobacco for chew.
