Hello All,
I have started growing a Black Mammoth strain of tobacco and they sprouted about 10 days ago. I have 10 plants and all seem to be doing quite well. I plan on making dip and/or chewing tobacco with this strain. Was wondering if anyone had any info on whether or not this type makes a good chew/dip and if anyone knew the growth patterns (total time till maturity, preferred moisture/sunlight conditions, etc.) Any info would help, thanks!

Howdy,

I grew some black mammoth to use in my pipe blend. They were very hearty plants and grew pretty tall. Unfortunately, I didn't keep any stats on time-to-maturity,etc. They did well. The leaves on mine were very dark green (maybe I over-fertilized?) and took a little 'extra' work to get them to yellow up and brown. turned a nice dark brown. Good plant, a bit strong for my tastes, but made a good harvest.

According to the ARS-GRIN data, it is 50-53 days from transplant to 50% plants with 1 flower. (I have found that their data is often unreliable.) Classed as a Fire-Cured variety, it's not surprising that wdoyle1980 found it very dark green, and slow to color-cure. I believe it's commonly used for dip and chew.
